Default Teaching jobs

What is the job market like for teachers and do you have to know someone to get a teaching job in Northeastern PA?

After the recent round of Federal investigations in NEPA which included exactly that - the "Have-to-Know-Someone" part - I have to think that particular aspect of teacher jobs will change. Especially in the area of having to pay cash to someone with influence to get you hired.

Other factors may be in play such as how the demand matches the supply of your particular area of expertise; how far you are willing to travel daily from where you live; and if the school district which is willing to hire you is a district where you would feel comfortable teaching.

Good luck.

You do not need to know someone to get a job. I moved back to this area last June and had 2 job offers for teaching.

What you do need is experience and it doesn't hurt to specialize in an area like special education or secondary math.

I think experience is the key. Districts around here are reluctant to take a chance on first-year teachers.

The paying cash for a teaching job may change, but the "have to know someone" part will probably never change around here. Teaching jobs are among the few stable good paying jobs in this area, and the school boards are made up of corrupt politicians...so I don't see that changing.

Unless, as the Bad Guy pointed out above, your specialization is something in demand like special education, science, or foreign languages, etc. But if its something common, like elementary....you'll need to know someone or you'll have to look in the growing schools like Pocono Mountain, Delaware Valley, etc.

Although I live in SE PA, I have taught for 25 years in different capacities (full-time, part-time, sub, homebound). I think if you are willing to sub for a year and become familiar with different districts, your chances of getting a full-time position are much greater. In this way, the districts will get to know you and be comfortable with your abilities. And remember: always dress and behave professionally; you will stand out among the administration. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

I have to laugh at my alma mater. The current teachers all replaced their parents when they retired. I suppose it's a dynasty?

My wife and I moved to PA 4 years ago. My wife has 10 years teaching experience in NY and has yet to get a teaching job in PA. She has subbed for the past 3 years and is barely called. If you don't know someone forget it. Crestwood, Wilkes-barre are the most corrupt areas when it comes to hiring their own. And if you're a NY'er I think it's worse.
