I live in Baltimore, and my grandfather moved up to Hanover, PA about 15 years ago when he retired. Over the past 15 years I usually visit him twice or so month in Hanover. I was wondering, the past year and a half I been coming to visit, I noticed an outburst of confederate flag license plates in-front of the cars, and huge confederate flags flying off the back of trucks.

From day one I always knew Hanover was always a small, kind of backwards, older population town. Nothing wrong with that, people have the right to live how they want, and it does seems like a nicer place for an older couple to retire, other than the weather haha. I was just wondering what is the deal with the sudden movement of confederate flags in Hanover? I know it's really close to Gettysburg so you got a lot of civil war buffs, but no way all them are. I could go from his house from around the new Walmart in Hanover to the Older Walmart and spot at least 5 cars with confederate flags. Almost every time the past year I've visited him. The drivers vary from old to young, whats the deal? Is Hanover really that racist? I lived in the South for a year when and I've seen more confederate flags this past year in Hanover than in the South.

Hanover always had the rep of being that way and maybe a lot of younger people took over from their parents as far as their convictions..I lived in Plymouth and had no need to go to Hanover so stayed away pretty much, having said that..Plymouth had it share of confederates...I've been gone since 97 so ...probably best...

Are you talking about the Hanover (borough and post office zip 17331) in SW York County, kind of near Gettysburg? That's not NE PA.

There are also a number of Hanover Townships in PA including the one in central Luzerne County, that one IS NE PA.

perhaps it isn't racism, but a new wave of "stand against the government" brewing?

Actually, I lived in Baltimore almost my hole life. Its great place to live, a lot of diversity and events all the time. The worst thing ever happened to me was my window getting hit with a baseball. My grandfather, in Hanover, had his car egged, broken into, and his house robbed............

Which Hanover is it, we still aren't sure which one you are referring to.

He's talking about the Hanover in South Central PA. The Hanover in Luzerne County is Hanover Township. This is why people REALLY need to start using the word "township" when they talk to people. I used to get irked when people told me I lived in Pittston when I lived in Pittston TOWNSHIP.

Default Here's the deal

Hanover, PA is a growing town... Much of which is becoming populated by people moving from Baltimore, Towson, and many other bigger cities. Those residents who have lived here all their lives don't really agree with it because they feel as though they're being overrun by these cities. The ones that proudly display the Confederate Flag consider themselves to be of the "backwoods" (redneck, if you will) population of the town. Even though most of them live in suburbanized locations. They see it as their way of making Hanover's history and original culture remain alive and not buried in industry, even though Hanover is part of the North not the South. Other kids, however, see it as a trend and do it to be cool... So they think.

And by the way... Hanover, PA is not in South Central York County.. It's South Western... Hence, South Western School District.

If she were talking about Hanover Township, my first guess would be that they were voicing a bit of rebellion about the taxes going up over 19%, the biggest increase in Luzerne County this round.
