Well, Wilkes-Barre area residents are gonna tell you Wilkes-Barre is better, and Scranton area residents are gonna tell you Scranton. Actually, both areas are very similar and have the same stats as far as heritage, jobs, income, housing prices, shopping ect. If I were you, I'd visit both city's and then decide for myself.

You're probably right...even crime wise, it seems Wilkes-Barre may have calmed down somewhat, and Scranton's crime has risen somewhat, so there may not even be a major difference in safety anymore. I will say one thing for Wilkes-Barre, it seems houses are a little cheaper there.

I'm in the same situation. Trying to figure out which city is better for young professionals since I may be taking a job in Hazleton.

For young professionals....probably about equal. If you're working in Hazleton, I would recommend Wilkes-Barre, since a drive from Scranton to Hazleton everyday will be a bit long.

Yeah I guess it is about 50 miles. Thanks. I always thought Wilkes-Barre was an affluent community but I guess I was wrong. Is there enough going on in Wilkes-Barre to have fun? Meaning lots of singles, bars, restaurants, etc.?

LOL! don't ge me wrong.. there is an affluent section in wilkes barre. but it aint the hamptons... Most of Wilkes Barre is down-right Blue Collar from the people to the cars they drive to the houses they live in. Thats why i respect it.

Although Scranton isnt bad; You definately dont want to drive from Scranton to Hazleton.. 81 is only two lanes and people drive slow.

The Only advice I have for you sir. AVOID WILKES BARRE AND SCRANTON CITY PROPERS LIKE THE PLAGUE! The Wage tax is pathetic.

I'm not sure what Hazleton's Wage Tax is. i'm guessing 1 to 1.5% ..... Wilkes Barre's is 3% and Scranton's is 3.4%? I think... Your going to end up paying Wilkes Barre City or City of Scranton an extra 1.5 to 2 % of your income... if your making a fair bit of money that can add up. Live in Kingston; or Plains, or Pittston even. Just trust my experience in saying you dont want to pay that tax just to say you live in Wilkes Barre City.

It really depends what you're looking for. In the end, I always liked Scranton more, but I did grow up there.

In fairness, I went to college and worked in Wilkes-Barre for awhile.

The funny thing is, both areas are kind of similar. There is some different in personalities etc...but nothing major.

The comment about the wage tax is true though. But the property taxes are lower in the cites...so it kinda of balances out. For me personally, I'd rather pay more for a property tax, but just moving to the area you're probably planning to rent at first anyhow.

I live on Long Island and planned on moving to the area also...I still may, but It won't know for a few months. Anyway...like you...I posted a few things and did a little research. People here have been very helpful! I also took two trips to the area. In the end, if I were to buy right now, I would buy in Kingston. It would be in the parts of Kingston that are walking distance to the heart of WB, basically over the Market Street bridge and also to Kirby Park. I am a walker for medical reasons and it's certainly good for anyone anyway. I looked at housing types and certainly prices and this is what all my research led me to. Good luck in your move if it happens.
