My grandparents owned the Canadensis Hotel until about the mid sixties. On many occasions I was in the Bluestone Room. I had refreshments there. We could have even met?

However; most of my visits were not formal. When I caddied; we would sneak into the pool room after work. Then they would chase us out if they thought we were a problem for the guest. It was good they had large front windows on the game room - which were not too far above the sidewalk. Several times we jumped out the windows to escape security!

There was a big labor turnover as I recall, but it was hard work and Renee was a tough but fair boss. If you didn't pull your weight or goofed off too much, you were shown the door. We lived in the men's dorm, which was OK and the kitchen staff got to eat whatever they wanted from that day's menu. The other boarding employees' food was different. I can't remember what I was paid, but I had no complaints at the time. I'm pretty sure that room and board were part of the deal

There were a lot of high class people who stayed at the hotel and also many large conferences and conventions. I remember one conference in particular. A group of high ranking officials from some US government department or agency came up from Washington. We prepared and served them an 8 course banquet that you would have had to see to appreciate.

I was sorry to see the Buck Hill close, but I guess that all good things must come to an end.

stevej64,

How was the auction? Did you have any nifty finds or did the prices go too high?

I never thought that the HOA would be cheap. There is an awful lot of old wealth in the cottages surrounding the old Inn.

In the late 1950’s or early 1960’s I was shown a magnificent A-frame just up stream from the golf club house. It had huge beams jutting out of the hillside that supported a magnificent deck overlooking the stream. I was told, at that time, that it was either a Frank Lloyd Wright plan or modeled after one of his plans. It supposedly cost over a $100,000. Keep in mind that $20,000 was a lot of money to pay for a house back then. A friend’s father was a carpenter on the job. That whole area is marked private property and you cannot just sight see.

I have hunted on the state game lands off the Devil’s Hole Road. I also have gone to many yard and garage sales in that area.

I also knew some of the Prices. One Price owned an old open garbage dump back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. We used to go rat hunting at the dump. The rats were so thick that you could not see the garbage under them. That was the most fun I ever had hunting. Our guns go so hot from shooting that we were afraid to load another round.

Buck Hill also had it’s own dump. However; they were probably a better class of rats! I never heard of their dump as having any problems.

When you hunted on the game lands did you go back into the woods and see the remains of a old hotel?

stevej64,

I used to know more about the old ruins. I cannot recall right now. I do think that it wasn’t a hotel. It did look like it had a huge fireplace (if I remember correctly).

The only thing I was really interested in were the pheasants that our game commission stocked!
