Hello all,

I currently live in St. Louis, MO and work as a software engineer for a defense contractor. I have a secret clearance. I've been looking for a new job lately and have noticed that a lot of the positions that require a security clearance are in the D.C/VA/MD area. I have family that lives around that area and I wouldn't mind moving there for a new job. So far I have posted my resume on ClearanceJobs.com, ClearedConnections.com, and the usual sites such as Careerbuilder.com. Anyone in here know the best method of obtaining a software job in Washington D.C.? Anyone in here work in the same field that could share their experiences?

Thanks!

Another action you can take is to go to the jobs sections on the websites of large contractors and apply online to them directly.

If you can swing a trip out here or two you could go to a couple of the clearance fairs that are probably advertised on the job boards you're posting on. Wear a suit and bring a pile of resumes with you. Lots of people get jobs here through those. They're only open to cleared folks, which keeps the riffraff out.

It's no different from any other place. Post your resume on career Web sites like Dice.com, Monster.com, and sites that specialize in defense-related jobs. Apply directly to companies. And finally, attend career fairs. Poof, you should have a job within a month!

When I was a project manager and needed to consider a new hire we had many responses to our posts on Monster, Dice, etc. To get a call from me, however, required answering the mail, that is, responding directly to the job and experience requirements. If you don't have direct experience, describe how your experience/training is related. If possible, research the project. It's a lot of work looking for a new position, but having a clearance does make it easier.

Thanks guys!

Too bad I live too far away to drive to those fairs. They would definitely help me at least spice up my resume for the particular niche I'm in.
