Last year I stumbled across the most amazing non-municipal/private fireworks display on Lake Thoreau. Anyone know if it will happen again this year? I did a little googling and only found these great photos from last year. The wonderful part of this firework show as that the fireworks were being launched from 4 or 5 places around the lake and also from a boat in the middle of the lake.

US Independence Day Fireworks over Lake Thoreau, Reston, Virginia. As dark falls, everyone who has a boat or floating dock embarks to enjoy the show as lakeside residents treat one another to a spectacular impromptu fireworks show over the lake. © Ri (http://www.rickcollier.com/Living/Holidays/4669856_hHjfU/3/601815898_2Wfqf#601817204_uABsy - broken link)

Wow,this sounds really nice (and maybe not too crowded). I wish someone knew something about it.

Maybe its just a well kept secret?

They were fantastic again this year!

Another reason it is great to live in the South Lakes area of Reston.

Next year I may have to try that. I love going into DC, but waiting for the metro afterwards can be a pain. If I wanted to see the Lake Thoreau fireworks, where would you recommend parking?

Parking on Ridge Heights Road or the South Lakes Shopping Center. Best views are from a boat on the lake or on the path along the dam.

Bumping to let people know about this gem. Don't know if it will happen again this year but I'm going to be there to find out.

The Lake Thoreau fireworks are non-sanctioned and have never been advertized. I live less than a mile from them and it took me five years to discover them.

Which are better. Lake Fairfax or Lake Thoreau?

I don't know but Lake Fairfax are sanctioned and Lake Thoreau's are non-sanctioned. I've only been to Lake Thoreau's. My guess would be that Lake Fairfax's are shorter and more spectacular and Lake Thoreau's are a little less dramatic but last much longer. Last year Lake Thoreau's show went on strong for more than an hour.
