My husband currently takes the Metro from WFC station to Smithsonian. While very convenient, he commutes at peak times - no choice - and often has to get off of the train to take a breath as it gets so packed - he is Mr. Klaus T. Phobic.

We picked our rental house as it was within minutes of a Metro station and I knew driving in would be a nightmare. However, he is often delayed, accosted by crazies, hot, and last week he had to get off because somebody had decided to use the back of a car as a bathroom - very nice! I know it's a better system than most but is there an alternative?

What I have in mind is a commuter bus where he can relax, read, maybe work on his laptop. I read about this kind of bus when I was looking into places further out (like Leesburg, Fredericksburg, etc.). We would almost move to a location with this kind of "luxury" commute when our lease is up! We do like our elementary school though....ah, the quandry of N. Virginia livin'.

Well, the commute would be longer, but perhaps move close to a VRE stop? (Maybe Burke?)

Lots of people DO drive, so they have decided that it's a livable nightmare. I would certainly try driving in, at different times of day and using different routes, before picking up and moving to a community served by a commuter bus. If you live near WFC, then you have lots of driving options using back roads through Arlington (try N. 26th St., which is what the cabbies with single passengers used to use when I-66 was HOV-3).

I don't know of a Fairfax commuter bus into DC. I wish there was one! I think his best bet would be to join an organized carpool or van pool. Have you looked at VRE?

Metrobus route 4 goes from 7 corners area to Rosslyn Station. It doesn't take too long either. There must be other Metrobus routes you can try.

Thank you for some good ideas. After more discussion, he may try to get a parking spot at work and give the drive a try. Since his return home varies based on workload, urgent matters, etc. I'm not sure he could stick to a scheduled van/car pool. I am thinking a new business venture here...limo bus service complete with all the amenities for the commuter!
