I accepted a promotion to the NOVA area in May. I have been living with my daughter in Sterling while my wife tries to sell our home in Louisiana. My daughter was told by her HOA that I need to get VA license plates if I want to continue to park at her condo and not get a ticket.

What are the regs regarding me still having my permanent address in Louisiana and the need to get my vehicle registered/licensed/taxed in NOVA? How will the police know if I am just in transit or a permanent resident skirting the taxes?

Any help is appreciated.

You need to change your plates if you plan to stay here.

That being said, I waited 2 years before I changed mine. But I still got a warning ticket while parked outside my home for not having that stupid "I paid my taxes" sticker on the car. So even with out of state plates, you still have to pay taxes if your car is here.

The county website explains these situations very well.

Good luck.

Only active duty military (and some qualifying college students) are allowed to maintain out-of-state residency. Everybody else...if you're here, you're livin' here....and subject to VA laws.

That said, lots of folks get away with it for a long time. But, it sounds like the HOA is locked onto you. So, you'll either have to comply or find somewhere else to park the car...

Thanks. I did go to the website earlier and I need proof of residency to get a license plate. It does look like I can get the "I paid taxes" decal without getting the plates though.

You can, and the reason is, the "I paid my taxes" decal is a local government (County) requirement. The license plates are a State government requirement...and the two don't really communicate much with each other.
