You asked if Williamsburg is worth it. And the answer is absolutely! Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Busch Gardens and Virginia Beach are all there. It's about a 4-hour drive from DC though. So, not practical for a day-trip.
Although more expensive I'd wait and see Williamsburg in the fall. Absolutely beautiful place when the leaves have color in them. Make room reservations early though and plan on 2-3 days.

Ride the VRE Manassas line, VRE Fredericksburg line, MARC Penn line, MARC Camden line and the MARC Brunswick line.

if you like history and nice country drives, consider going to Gettysburg in southern PA. Very well preserved, plus some decent old restaurants for fun. The battlefield is free and quite sobering to visit.

There are some out near Shenandoah Natl. Park. Fox River or something is one of them. I think there are others in Loudoun; those might be closer.
