I had trouble waking up and getting out of bed this morning - it was a lot darker than it has been at that time of day. And there was this sound I didn't recognize at first - a nice, gentle, background noise that made sleep all the more enjoyable.

And then I realized ... it's raining!

I'm probably jinxing the whole thing, and this is the beginning of 40 days & 40 nights of rain (and in fact the Weather Channel predicts scattered/isolated thunderstorms for 7 of the next 9 days), but after such a prolonged heat and dry spell, I don't care.

The sound of rain on the roof is a very welcome sound.

I couldn't agree more and I'm from Seattle after all! My dogs don't seem too thrilled. They must have forgotten how we previously lived in Seattle. Cheers to much happier plants, grass and trees!

It's nice, but it is going to make for one sloppy swim meet this morning.

I love the sound of rain, and I was so ready for this rain. I hope it rains all day.

Can we practically hear all the plants drinking it up? Our plants were so thirsty. I was so happy to wake up to this, even though we are planning to go over to the Reston Festival in the afternoon.

I know we needed it and it will be a nice break from the heat, but I can't help looking out at it and feeling gloomy. I do love those sunny days!

One word of caution - after such a dry spell, the streets are sure to be slick this morning.

I love it, but I feel sorry for friends who have to drive down to Richmond today. That's an ugly road on a dry day.

Just got back. They decided to postpone the meet. It might as well keep raining for a while.

Now to drain some water out of the rain barrel. It's overflowing.
