The thread about highway signs reminded me of one of the things I really like about living here. We have no billboards!

(At least, there are none in my neck of the woods. I'm not 100% sure how far the billboard free zone goes. Is all of Nova also billboard free, or just Loudoun?)

Anyway, I thought this might make an interesting topic. Drive along the parkways or the toll road and you'll see architecture, blue sky, and mostly lots of trees. That's something I like to see, but I can also see a case could be made for why we should have billboards.

So.... what do you think? Would you like to see billboards here? Or should we keep things the way they are?

Keep things as-is w/ no billboards..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it" right?

Just curious, how do you think they might be able to be an advantage though normie?

I never realized there are no billboards here! I think I like it the way it is with the beautiful green trees. Funny, when I go "home" to California now, it is almost jarring driving on the highways with the lack of greenery.

Default All abercrombied up, and nowhere to go

We don't need billboards, we now have enough people walking around wearing t-shirts that might as well be billboards.

Sometimes I like them. Some of them can make me laugh. But it's also true that they can get very ratty looking and too many in a row can look trashy. Of course, sometimes even just one or two can look trashy. It all depends on the sign I guess.

I am in favor of letting companies have larger signs on their building. It's sad that we've lost a few corporations because of strict sign ordinances. But I guess that's a slightly different topic.

Can you imagine billboards along a heavily treed parkway like Fairfax County Parkway? It would look horrible.

If you like the lack of billboards, you can thank Ladybird Johnson. She was the advocate behind limiting billboards on the nation's highways.

I miss the Burma-Shave signs. Anyone else old enough to remember them? (I know Normie is)

I just returned from a trip to PA and have to admit, I enjoyed seeing them again. Some stretches of road are boring and they add some interest as well as advertising places to visit, eat, radio stations, etc. I wouldn't want to see tons of them, but some.
