i need to find a 1bd.rm. apt close to Springfield or within 30min drive to Springfield, in the $500-$800 range. any suggestions? i would like something newer and clean if possible.

I don't think you'll find a corporate managed place in that price range (at least, not any place you'd want to live). I would look on CL for a basement apartment in someone's home. It looks like there are a few in Woodbridge or Manassas.

You'll have much better luck if you're willing to split a 2br with a roommate.

Ditto the above. For a corporate complex, $1000 is the bare minimum for a decent 1BR unit in an "okay" neighborhood. Newer and cleaner would mean another $300-400. Also note that due to the extreme traffic conditions here, a 30 minute drive can be as little as 10 miles, depending on from where you're commuting.

what about a tad to the south, closer to Spotsylvania ??

How much of a commute can you live with? Spotsylvania will take you well over an hour. It's not exactly "a tad to the south."

i am doing 2hrs one way now. 1hr each way is a big improvement. i can live with 1hr considering the apartment will be temp, etc. and perhaps not all the way in Spotsylvania, just that direction, etc.
