Maybe geographically challenged people. Southwestern Virginia is way down beyond Lynchburg, for example Wythe County. Sorry to break it to folks but them parts out West is still Northern VA. A more geographically correct term for where most of the posters here live would be "the DC Suburbs of Northern Virginia".

I am not familiar with this area you are talking about, but I am familiar with the traffic becoming stop and go for miles, and then when it finally does clear out there is nothing to be seen as to the delays. I comment to my husband every time we head out either 66 or 95 that surely there is road work or an accident causing the delays, but nope never is. IMO it is people tapping their brakes for some insane reason and it sets off a chain reaction, or it is the merging issue that people seem to have in this area.

The OP was discussing a road just south of Bluefield, WV. Look at a map - Bluefield is way down beyond Lynchburg! In no way, shape or form is it in Northern Virginia, Northwest Virginia, or anything other than Southwest Virginia.

Does that look like it's in the northern part of Virginia?

About 4 hours away from what could reasonably be considered Northern Virginia. Should really be in the 'Virginia' forum.

Okay will freely admit I'm the geographically challenged idiot here. I missed the Bluefield reference and thought we were talking about somewhere North of the 81/66 interchange. To be honest I've never been on 77 or in Bluefield so my earlier lucky guess of 81 was just that.

Not everyone would have admitted that, so I've gotta give you credit!

At the end of this nightmare, there was nothing apparent that would have caused this. All I can remember is that at the end of this road, you had a choice to either exit to the right (single lane) or take an entrance ramp (single lane) which merged with interstate 77 towards Bluefield..What a pain!. Does anybody know what road this was and how the heck can I avoid it next time.

I checked Google Maps for a route from Oak Island to Pittsburgh (not knowing where in western PA you were headed).

The Western route (748 miles, 11 hours & 10 minutes) features routes 73/74, 77, and 79 .... and 77 shares the same road surface as 81 for a few miles, roughly between Fort Chiswell and Wytheville, VA. It sounds like that's where you were.

The Eastern route (718 miles, 11 hours & 14 minutes) features routes 40, 795, 95, 17, 522, 70 and 76. This would take you along the southern-most fringes of Northern VA.

I hesitate to recommend 95 to anyone going anywhere at any time, but if you've had problems with the western route, perhaps you might want to try 95 the next time, and compare the two.

Check out Google Maps.
