Say you live in Fairfax, apart from ikea, walmart and office depot where are the best places to buy furniture like an office desk, bed etc. ? And do these places do installations?

Craigslist

Crate and Barrel
Pottery Barn
CB2
West Elm

You assemble it yourself if necessary - usually easy. Also, they all have catalogs and also stores near here, so you can shop however you want.

I bought office furniture and a bedroom set from Crate and Barrel. Yes, they do delivery and installation for an extra fee. I think there are alot of furniture stores in Fairfax: Havertys, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Upscale Resale.

Room & Board recently opened in the District, but it's not in the same price range as Ikea and Walmart/Target. There's also a cool furniture store in Fairfax called BIF; it's on Lee Highway. If you end up at Ikea, you can get one of their contractors to come and assemble stuff (at an additional cost)

Depends on your style, I like modern contemporary though my master bedroom is traditional

bo concepts
Theodores
Top drawer in Columbia
Scan
Horchow.com
Belfort furniture in sterling
Macys
I also have several contemporary pieces purchased direct on eBay from the manufacturers before the retail store markups and lots of high quality craigslist bargains from the many transient families in this area that move and foreclosures leading folks to downsize furniture

My wife uses Overstock.com and Ebay for furniture. Most I have to put together. We've purchased very good stuff online after researching the reviews, and saved some money.

In addition to those mentioned earlier, if you like transitional and are willing to pay more (e.g., for handmade, all cherry, etc.) you might consider:

Creative Classics (in Old Town) (some furniture is made in Vermont)

If you want custom cabinets or furniture made, try:

Hardwood Artisans

Expensive but very high quality, and locally made.

Service was great at both stores when I bought stuff there. Yes, they deliver/install, for an additional fee.
