According to an article in the paper today, at least 25 percent of area workers telework at least occasionally. That's up from 11 percent in 2001.

In addition, the number of drivers riding solo dropped from from 70 percent in 2001 to 64 percent in 2010. The number of transit users rose from 17 percent in 2001 to 21 percent in 2010.

It's kind of silly with the internet and VPNs that so many people have to waste time going to an office far from home just to sit and stare at a computer screen.

I don't see no difference. The traffic is just as crappy as it was 10 years ago, if not crappier

(Raises hand). That would be my job exactly. On occasion it's helpful for me to just walk down a flight of stairs at my office to consult someone or retrieve a file, but 95% of my job can actually be conducted while sitting in my boxers in my living room eating bon-bons while crunching numbers on my laptop. Nevertheless I add one more car each day back-and-forth to the ever-worsening Route 7 Conga Line.

Many people have jobs that require security clearances. It's hard to do work at home that needs a secure environment.

Not really. It depends on the nature of the work. With hardware encryption and VPN, it's not so tough to do any longer.

I wonder if this is mostly due to the increasing popularity of slugging?

And in today's world, your boss, subordinates and co-workers may very well be spread out around the country so going to an office may provide no benefit of work group interaction. The company I work for is actively encouraging work from home to reduce real estate costs. Surprisingly there are a lot of people who resist it. Perhaps the office provides a refuge from a not so desirable home life or they just love sitting in a cube all day.
