Hello,

My job is potentially moving to Mclean, VA (Tyson's) from Minneapolis. Our primary concern in choosing a location is to find a good middle/high school situation for our children. There are plenty of sites that rave about the quality academics for the area schools. However, we're trying to get a sense of the social climates as well, such as cliques, bullying, $$$ haves/have not's issues, etc.

FYI, we're considering the Vienna area.

Also, how do the soccer leagues work out there? My daughter is on a competitive team and we'd like to get her into something similar in VA.

thanks
david

Vienna doesn't have its own school system; students who live in either the town of Vienna or unincorporated parts of Fairfax County with Vienna mailing address attend Fairfax County schools.

Students who live in the Town of Vienna attend either Thoreau or Kilmer Middle School, and then Madison HS. Students who live in other parts of Fairfax County with Vienna addresses may attend a bunch of different middle/high school combinations (Thoreau/Madison, Kilmer/Marshall, Kilmer/Madison, Longfellow/McLean, Hughes/South Lakes, Jackson/Oakton, Thoreau/Marshall, Cooper/Langley, or Jackson/Falls Church), so you have to check the specific address to be sure where you'd be assigned. The FCPS web site (www.fcps.edu) has a "boundary locator" where you find out the schools for a particular address.

In addition, the SchoolRanks site - www.schoolranks.com - will give you a very good idea for how the test scores at the various middle and high schools compare. In terms of the social climates, Cooper MS/Langley HS serve the most affluent group of students in the county, with some of what connotes in terms of students with ready access to lots of $$$$. In any event, there are only two small subdivisions with Vienna addresses assigned to those schools.

Soccer is a spring sport at the local high schools, but if you're interested, here's the link to Vienna Youth Soccer (with information about their travel teams):

Hi,

We live in the Town of Vienna and find it to be a great place for families. When we were choosing where to live, there were many factors we considered including distance to jobs, schools, affordability, family-orientedness, and walkability. We found Vienna to be a great combination of all of the above. The test scores at the schools are high up there for the area, but not the highest (that would be schools in McLean); the people seemed friendly and down to earth; the area was fairly affordable (this was 10 years ago); the location was convenient to downtown, farther out, and even to Maryland where I was working; and the Town has a central downtown area which is not common in NoVA. (It's not quaint but functional.)

After 10 years of living here, we are happy with our choice. We walk or ride our bikes everywhere - bike paths, the library, parks, supermarkets, the community center, ballfields, and school. The people are not snobby or pretencious. We know people who have money and belong to the local country club, and others who have a family of 6 living in a 1100 square-foot ranch house. We've been happy with the schools (only preschool and elementary so far for us). There are tons of family-friendly activities throughout the year. Our children take classes at the community center and are involved in many afterschool activities. People smile and say hello when you walk by.

Overall, we love living here. I cannot address the social climates in middle or high school. But the kids I know who are in middle and high school (at Thoreau and Madison) seem like friendly, well-adjusted kids. I have not heard that they have to wear a certain brand of clothes to fit in, but I'm sure someone with older kids could address that better. I will mention that I read online that Oakton high school might have a clique issue but whether that's widespread or not, I don't know. I'm sure there's some of that in every high school, but it might be more prevalent in some schools.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have regarding Vienna. I'd be happy to help you as best I can.

We have lived in Vienna for the last 14 years and my girls went to Westbriar/Kilmer/Marshall...as we are on the border of Marshall/Madison line ( I look out my window and can see houses in the Madison district) My girls have friends in both schools They also have good friends that go to Langley as Westbriar fed into Cooper and Langley years ago...

As far as test scores the FPSC can address that and I do believe that TJ is the highest.

In my 12 years in the HS world I have not heard of any particular school that has "cliques or bullying" I am sure as with all teens there may be some but it does not seem to be a hugh issue..not that I have heard about anyway

As far as $$ Northern Va is a pretty pricey place to live as it is so there is a certain income level in all the school but there are also modest homes and I am sure incomes. All 3 of my daughters had friends from modest households to wealthy ones...

As far as sports Vienna has one of the best youth leagues for sports in the area...for both recreational and travel.
I can speak only of softball, all my 3 girls played in VGSL the house league ,my youngest went on to play travel ball and is now playing D2 in College ..so there are all levels...As far as the HS go the Liberty District which is home to Madison/Marshall/Langley/McLean is one of the most competitive in the area...

Hope this helps feel free to ask anyother questions that come to mind
