Currently living in NYC and just got a job offer in VA. Upon submitting notice, my current NYC job offered to match the salary (Upper $60s) but I think it's really going to be less take home pay with the gouging NYS and NYC taxes.

Anyone have any experience moving between NYC and VA and notice a huge difference in their paychecks??

My wife and I recently spent a year living in NYC (Manhattan) and then moved back to VA (Arlington). Your taxes here will be much, much lower. I don't know the specific percentages, but with NYC you're paying the higher NY State income tax plus the city tax. Here it's just VA tax, which is in itself lower than that of most other states.

If you buy a home here (which will be more possible given the lower condo/townhouse prices than in NYC), your property taxes will also be much lower. As will your other costs--e.g., parking, food, utilities.

Good luck!

Thanks! I've always wondered how accurate those calculators are. It looks like I'd take home about $100 more per paycheck just for moving to VA. $2600 more per year could pay for a nice vacation!

Are you moving to save money from the new job or looking for a change in lifestyle too?

Overall, rent and/or buying a home will be less expensive as well as the property taxes. Utilities should be cheaper too as well as everyday services like your internet, etc. NoVA has a luxury tax on vehicles which NY doesn't have so this would be extra for you. Food is better in NYC but cost less in VA. Clothing, depending where/how you shop would be comparable in price (although NYC to me has way more selection and better buys if you know where to go). Alcohol is probably cheaper in NYC/north Jersey. Not sure how much gasoline costs in NYC or if you hike it to NJ where it's almost always cheaper across the board. Prices of gas is fairly constant in NoVA with prices dropping if you go further south or west. Not sure about going out but there are so many places in NoVa and DC with 1/2 price Happy Hour drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

We are originally from NJ with family and close roots to NYC/NJ but have lived in NoVA for 20+ years now. We like it alot. Good luck!

Thanks! Yeah I'm def looking for a lifestyle change as well. I've been away from NoVA for 5 years and have always wanted to go back. Yes the traffic is dreadful, but at least no one throws up on you on the subway! I would think my NYC employer would should have done better than just match the VA salary. Especially since I'll actually be bringing home LESS money in my paycheck!

Well, throughout all these years that I've taken the metro, can't say anyone threw up on me (I think I would fight them). However, we do have our fair share of gross and otherwise highly-annoying personages on the metro.

Also you won't see giant rats in our metro like in NYC. Ours are pretty much underground. And last time I was in NYC I saw this gigantic bug on the subway platform, looked like a mutant praying mantis or something from that movie "Mimic".

Hahaha, hey this reminds me of that thread we used to have about weird things people have seen on the metro. We have a whole new crowd of people in the forum these days, I'll bet they have some good stories to add. When I get a moment I'll dig that thread up.
