Hi! middle-aged prof. couple moving to work at Andrews AFB. Found some houses to rent in the 22808 area of Virginia, near Ft. Hunt National Park or in Hollindale area. Kids are in college, we want some serene surroundings, low/no crime, good community center/activities, possible art leage, access to golf and some social life. Is this a good community? what others would you recommend? Safety and activities for my age group are paramount. thank you!

Wow, you've stumped me. I've usually heard a thing or two about most neighborhoods but this one is completely new to me. Anyone else out there know anything about this area?

Are you talking about 22308? Fort Hunt and Hollin Hall? If yes, then those are great areas. Not so sure about the adult activities but you are so close to Old Town and I know a lot of Meetup groups congregate there.

You'd basically just outside of Alexandria proper in its Fairfax County section. I agree that you would be in a safe area but it is typical suburbia. The shopping center in Fort Hunt may be a mild social hub at best. There is also a rec center nearby as well: Mount Vernon RECenter, Fairfax County Park Authority .

Old Town Alexandria, only a few miles away, is popular with those 30 and up so you would fit right in. Among other activities, there is an Art League http://www.theartleague.org which features among other activities -an art league is indeed less than a mile away. If you like to run, walk or bike, you'll enjoy doing so along the nearby waterfront.

RE: Golf, there's a private country club in Fort Hunt that, if I recall, is fairly exclusive. Depending on your preferences, that may (not) be good news.

Hello, the Waynewood area in 22308 is a very nice order established neighborhood right near the Potomac river with biking trails alongside the river. "River Farm" is also there which is the American Horticultural Society headquarters (if you like gardening, it's a beautiful old house on the river with gardens to wander through) My husband and I are currently looking at houses in the area as well. The homes are from the 1950's - 1960's and can range anywhere in price between $500,000 up to $6 Million for the homes with Potomoc river views.
