For those of you that make the commute, what's the actual commute time?

I'm searching for areas to live with my two sets of twins for a job I will be starting soon. The job is located just off the national mall. I've been sticking to searches for places with trains, but for reasonably close in locations I like the looks of the Lowes Island area.

So I'm trying to get a feel for what the commute would really be like. I'd plan on getting to the office no later than 7:30 am, possibly 7 if it makes a difference.

So my questions are:

How long is a straight commute, single driver at that time?

Does the tollroad make it shorter? If so, what's that cost and what would the typical drive time be there?

Are there HOV lanes? I might be able to find someone else in the office or nearby to share a ride. If there are, how long would that typical commute be?

What about driving to Falls Church and taking the metro? Is that a realistic option and, if so, how long would that take?

I'm hoping someone makes the commute in one or more of these ways and might have some input for timing. I'm really trying to balance commuting times and effort with locations that fit my needs. So far all of the areas that I like are pretty distant from DC.

Thanks for any input!

I believe there is a bus to the falls church metro that leaves from the shopping center in Lowes Island.
