Hi Everyone,

I have been reading various posts regarding the locations to buy a SFH in the NoVa area. We are looking for a nice family friendly area with newer homes.
We do not mind moving a little further out and are looking at newer SFH in the area. Given the prices and schools, we are considering buying a home in KirkPatrick Farms in Aldie, VA

I know that commute can be a killer. I have to commute to DC every day. Planning for a work day from 7AM to 3:30 PM. I am considering commuting on the Loudoun County Commuter Bus. The timings given in the county website makes me feel like the commute is doable. Does anyone have any experience with the bus? Is it full? Will I be able to it if I leave at 6AM and start to home at 3:30 PM. Any advice?

Thanks

I'm not from that immediate area but it doesn't look like it will be a nice commute. The commute via car would be at least an hour. With traffic and HOV restrictions during rush-hour most likely 1.5 -2 hours. Via bus.... not even sure, I guess it would depend on how often it stops.

Also depends on where in DC you're going. It's a big city.

I had the same question. I have seen the bus from DC in the evenings seen a few people boarding the bus but not sure if it is full since it has tainted windows and cannot see what the situation is on the inside. I would also like to know about the parking situation at the park and ride. Not sure how it is going to be ? But I will be commuting from Aldie starting sometime next month.

I can get door to door from Ashburn to the Ronald Reagan building in DC from between 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes taking the commuter bus from Dulles North. Buses tend to be somewhat full (and, from Rosslyn, standing room sometimes). I think parking at Dulles North can be challenging the later in the morning you go. I know the new park and ride in Leesburg off Sycolin is never full.

This was leaving between 7:15am and 7:45am in the morning and returning 4pm (ish) from DC. Generally, the earlier you come and go (pre-7am in the morning and pre-3pm in the afternoon) gets you away from the bulk of the traffic. I would think that at 6am you would have no problems with parking or full buses at all. And traffic will be lighter then. Once school starts, traffic really gets bad around 7:30am as those kiddos need to make it onto their buses.

I live in Gainesville and take the VRE to DC from Manassas. It takes me about 1.5 hours each way door to door.

"I know that commute can be a killer."

Just keep repeating that to yourself, several times a day, and make sure that the newer house you will be able to buy in Aldie will be worth that commute.
If possible, consider trying out the commute before you buy the house.

Well, that's what I thought when we bought an older home much closer in. But after years of dealing with everything falling apart - roof, HVAC, new plumbing etc, I am done buying an older home even if its 15 minutes from DC. That is that choice that we have made. I realize Aldie is furthur out, but hey, I can look for a job much closer in... Anyway, thanks all.
