We are thinking of buying a home in Mantua. Is there anything that we should be concerned about? (aside from a 45 minute commute to Pentagon City where we work!) Any parts of the neighborhood that are not as nice> Anything great about the neighborhood that you love?

There was an underground oil leak about 20 years ago. Here is a Post article from 1995 with more info. It doesn't seem to be an issue now, but only those who were around DC at that time would know about it. washingtonpost.com: Mantua: After the Oil Spill, Life Is Good Again

Mantua is a nice neighborhood. I don't know it intimately as I live in Vienna. But my daughter goes to summer camp nearby, and we drive through it everyday. It seems to be safe - I always see people walking their dogs, jogging, etc. We bought our house in 2000 in Vienna because I wanted an "in-town" kind of lifestyle so we didn't really consider it. But the schools are good, and it's relatively convenient to DC. I would have definitely bought there if I could walk to more things and have the feeling of a downtown. One of my friends strongly considered it about the same time but decided against it because of the underground oil leak a few years earlier that claremarie alluded to. Other than that, there aren't any concerns that I am aware of. One other thing came to mind - the area has a higher Jewish presence than in most other parts of Northern Virginia. The Jewish Community Center is there as well as a couple of synagogues so it has attracted a fair number of Jews. Probably wouldn't matter to most people, but thought I'd mention it.

Great place to live. I especially like the Ridgelea Hills neighborhood (usually considered part of Mantua).
