Hey All,
I was just offered a job in Chantilly, VA. I am a single woman in her mid-30s. I like to be active and live in a place with similar folks. (I live in San Francisco right now and love it but can't find a job here). I also don't like long commutes. Where might be a place that I could live, find what I am lookin for, and yet not live in a car on the freeway? Some folks have suggested Arlington, but, at least when I was in town for an interview, the traffic going east during the evening rush hour looked horrific.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give,

Anne

You might like Old Town Fairfax or perhaps Reston Town Center. Neither of these are quite like the areas in Arlington that may have appealed to you. Nonetheless, they should be able to hold you over pretty well until the weekend.

I used to work in Chantilly myself, but I was coming from Maryland. It was a decent commute once I got to I-66, but that might change occasionally because of the Silver Line Metro construction. Overall it is fine because you go against the city traffic. My suggestion is, if you live in Arlington try to get something relatively close to I-66 and you should have a decent commute. I'm not sure exactly what you might be looking for as far as amenities or cost, but Fair Lakes is another place to consider which has a lot of stores, restaurants, beautiful areas to walk and to bike ride, and is a very short drive to Chantilly.

Arlington on I-66 has gotten terrible for reverse commutes. Jammed between Glebe and the Route 29 for the most part. Route 50 or Wilson would probably be better for the OP. On the other hand if 30 minutes is too much for OP nowhere in Arlington is going to work.

OP, I'd recommend the towns/city of Herndon/Fairfax/Vienna, or Reston. Fair Lakes is a mixed bag -- lots of stores, etc., but not sure how walkable it all is. Some parts seem to be, other parts not so much.

Good luck.

Fair Lakes or Reston. Reston is nice since you have a good infrastructure there and the metro will be there in a few years as well. Plus you have a nice variety of restaurants and shops there at your fingertips. It is a very well maintained community to the eye. Also a variety of condos and townhouses in Reston. Fair Lakes is similar but on a larger scale meaning spread out. I still cant get used to the Fair lakes pwky and fair lakes blvd. It all looks the same to me there. I would pick Reston9 closer to the town center) since it is more geared for people in your age bracket, lots of professionals there married and single.

I would look at Reston or the downtown area of Fairfax City first. My DH commutes to the Dulles area (Chantilly) from north arlington and we are looking to move b/c his commute is so long.

Ditto! You can find a good range of condos, townhomes or detached homes in either of those areas.

Reston has lots of single 30-something professionals. It's not quite the place you want to live if you want to eschew your vehicle, but if you move near to Reston Town Center you can be within walking distance of a Best Buy, Harris Teeter (grocery store), Barnes & Noble, Starbuck's (several), restaurants (mostly upscale chains like Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, etc.), retail stores, a movie theater, bars, an outdoor ice skating rink, etc. I would highly advise against living car-free in Reston, but if you like what Reston Town Center has to offer it can meet your day-to-day needs.
