When I see Asians who come into the US for their Masters and earn $75K-plus as their starting salaries and live comfortably well, it is very easy to say, "why is it difficult for African-Americans or Hispanics to be successful". Especially, when you consider that the Asians who came here for their Masters essentially got out of their comfort zone (home country), left their families behind and ventured into a new world with a determination to succeed, so clearly this must be a lot more challenging than what African-Americans or Hispanics have to face since they are already here!

Yes, it is certainly challenging, but the biggest difference is that Asians who come here for their Masters have academically-oriented parents. This rubs on to the children and that's what I referred to in my earlier post that Asians traditonally and culturally place a huge emphasis on education. Again, not implying that Asians are smarter so do not interpret it that way.

I think we need to figure out what this "something" is that will trigger the realization that "education is extremely important" in all low-income families irrespective of whether they are African-Americans or Hispanics. We should really have a new thread that discusses these ideas.

Thanks,
K
That's not always the case. The first asians that started to succeed in the US were the Chinese. Many Chinese who emigrated to the US came from humble beginnings such as farming and factory work.

They learned the value of education as the key to success in the US and didn't want their kids to work in laundries and Chinese restaurants, and instilled those values of education to their first generation kids.

Blacks and any other racial groups who are in poverty need to instill the same kind of values to their children. Public education is free.

What if it was a Republican government that set up a military style boot camp, taught the kids conservative values and then inducted them into several years of military service after. Also, let's say it's self funding and cost you nothing. Would you still be against it?
