I have a neighbor here in McLean who uses her Florida address as her residence for tax purposes. We live in a condo complex and she's here 11 months out of the year. I just read that 183 days a year makes you a VA resident. Not only is she avoiding Virginia taxes, but she is claiming a homestead exemption on her FL property (and has since 2006).

Is there a hotline for anonymously reporting tax evaders? The week *before* I left Texas, I cancelled my homestead exemption and changed all filing statuses. But that's me.

I'm just curious: How do you know all this?
Do you watch her come and go and can definitely say that she is there 11 months out of the year?

And how do you know about the homestead exemption? Did she tell you that?

You didn't mention if she works in the area?

It's a small complex and we've spoken many times. She claims a homestead exemption in FL -- I asked. She drives a FL-registered Jaguar, and it's been housed in the garage for a year now; probably more. She's quite the busy bee, and I see her almost every day. She did go to FL for three days this month, but that's it.

The homestead and car tax evasion are the biggest issues. She's a dyed-in-the-wool Replubican and it's all a bit galling to me.

If she is a Republican, then by all means report the woman!

Goodness knows there are people from both political parties here in NoVA/DC who abuse the tax laws.

You want to be anonymous, but you are electronically publishing details of what you know. She's probably the one, or some other evader, asking you these questions. Don't ask, don't tell.

The IRS has a tip line Google it, and report. This woman, if she finds out, is going to make your life hell for the next five years.

I asked but I'm not the woman nor am I an evader. I only asked because there are folks who live here because of a military assignment or temporarily for a certain situation (i.e., taking care of someone sick or aging). And if I did know the woman, I wouldn't tell. I'm no rat.

I think the OP was talking about the VA Personal Property Tax (for vehicles)?

Sorry. I didn't go back and look at who posted the questions. You are quite a regular, and I'm sure that you are legit. Appyologies.

Federal Income Tax: The IRS might be interested in which is truly her primary residence once she sells one or the other. Also, if she is renting the FL property to one or more parties, and not reporting the income, they would be interested. There may be other tax implications.

Real Estate Tax: Her real property in McLean and in Florida would be taxed by the county or city (or maybe the state) in which it is located. They would be the one that determines whether she should receive the homestead exemption.

Personal Property Tax: The State of VA would assess car tax if she is a resident here. However, I think the counties have a hand in administration, as the link cdmurphy posted suggests.

If you think she will realize that you are the one who reported her, I agree with those who say she will likely not be pleased with you. But there is a question of what's the right thing to do. If in fact she's cheating on her taxes, everyone else pays more as a result. Of course, only the investigating agency will be able to determine whether she is.

In any case, you may want to confront it head on, and just tell her that she may want to initiate 'fessing up to them, because you plan to report her actions.
