We are planning to relocate to Northern Virginia from New York, so we are used to long commutes. My husband will be commuting to D.C. for work. What public transportation options are available from the Countryside subdivision in Sterling? Would he take a bus to a Metro station? How long would the commute take?

Here is the link to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's website. You can plug in the two addresses and use that the calculate the distance and commute via public transport.

That being said, I think that the commute would be nightmarish even by local standards.

Here's a link to Loudoun County's commuter buses:

Commuter Bus Schedules (http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=969 - broken link)

More than a few Loudoun County buses come into DC so you wouldn't be alone. However, if it is possible to move in closer to Fairfax County, it would be recommended. It may come down a choice between family quality time and newer, more spacious amenities.

I know someone who lives in the same general area, closer to Cascades, and he travels at very early hours, but drives to Herndon/Monroe to catch the express bus to the West Falls Church Metro and then Downtown. The commute is not too bad, at least the driving portion, which is Route 7 East to the Fairfax County Parkway, to a R on Sunrise Valley, and the bus park and ride lot is on the right. Currently, the parking is free at Herndon/Monroe, though there bus fare on the Fairfax Connector bus to the WFC Metro station.

Here's a link to Park and Ride lots in Fairfax County: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot/parkride.htm

There's also a bus to WFC metro that leaves from Lowes Island, which is just down the street from Countryside. The bus picks up commuters at the shopping plaza at the intersection of Lowes Island Blvd. and Algonkian Parkway. There is free parking reserved for commuters. You'll find this route listed in the Loudoun Bus schedule. The trip takes about an hour, if you happen to ctach a metro train right away.
