Just came across this article on the Springfield Mall..

Vornado Realty Trust’s delinquent $160 million loan package for the Springfield Mall is up for sale.

Both Penny's and Target have recently or are close to completing their own renovations to their stores in the mall and every decent restaurant and store in that area always seems to be crowded.. The sale and renovation seems like a big win for everyone if they can get it going..

I'd like to see this mall improved as well as Landmark. Springfield Mall used to be THE place to go since every store imaginable (just about) was there.

I agree! When I lived in Maryland (back in the 70s) it was the only mall to go to that was good. I was just reminiscing about it yesterday and how, as a teen, I would go to Korvette's regularly because they had great deals on albums. I was trying to figure out what took the place of Korvette's and I think it is the now-defunct food court.

I really wish they would spruce it up. Living in Woodbridge, I can get up there really fast for a quick trip to Penney's or Macy's. The Penney's is fairly nice since the remodel.

I think a funny thing is that the plan was to make it an "outside" mall like a town center. Remember when Landmark was an outside mall and they closed it in because indoor malls were the rage? Oh, how the pendulum swings.

From what I hear and this is rumors I might add, Landmark mall will be torn down and a Town center is going up in its place. That's the reason for all the empty stores.

I agree...Woodbridge, Springfield, Kingstowne and Ft Belvoir (just to name a few) are all a quick, easy trip to this mall... There is a real void in this area and I would guess it is the same around the landmark mall. The Town Center concept for the Springfield Mall looked fabulous and a few non chain places over there would do well I would think..

I'd like to know who "they" interview to decide that open air malls are better. If I'm shopping, unless it's a cute little historic area or something, I'd rather have the stores INSIDE, choices to stroll by, etc. - sounds like they are going more to strip mall type places and I'm not fond of them. If I choose to go to a specific store and want to "see what else there is" - I'm not going to drive or walk to the other end of the place. Bad weather, that should be heaven to enclosed mall stores (IMO).

I agree with. I doubt either place will look like a strip mall but rather the whole "town center" approach which, IMO, is a glorifed strip mall.

I so agree with this! IMO, the outdoor mall idea looks nice to people driving by but isn't as pedestrian oriented as you might think. IMO they actually discourage walking, rather than encourage it. As you point out, people are more likely to drive to the parking next to an outdoor store, but when they go to a mall they are more likely to park at one end and walk through at least part of the mall. And in rainy/snowly/cold/hot weather an inside mall attracts walkers who need to escape the weather. Will these outside malls develop Mall Walking Clubs? I doubt it.
