I think Caribbean Grill on Lee Highway in Arlington (near George Mason) has a decent Cuban sandwich, even if it's probably not up to NYC standards.

You mean Miami standards. New York would be more the place for Puerto Rican sandwiches.

I actually meant up to the standards of "La Rosita," a now-defunct but in-its-heyday glorious Cuban restraurant on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

But I suppose "Calle Ocho" Miami standards for Cuban sandwiches are pretty high, too.

The best Cuban restaurant in the metro area is called Cuba de Ayer its in MD its a small place in a rundown shopping center but the interior decor is very nice and it gets crowded. They have the best food, including Cuban sandwiches, its a little far but worth the ride if you love Cuban food.
