9:30 Club--both back when it was 930 F St. N.W. and also after it moved to its current location. I like the new location better---the old one was a craphole (it really was Washington's answer to CBGB's). Saw Casey Chambers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Randy Crouse and Roseanne Cash. Also saw bands that were so forgettable I can't remember them.

I used to go to the 9:30 Club back in the 90s....saw Mary Chapin Carpenter and Natalie Merchant a bunch of times there. Don't remember who else I saw but those are the ones that stand out.

Saw Red Hot Chili Peppers in the 80s. Lots of others I can't even remember.

Tom Russell at Jammin' Java whenever he's in town, which is usually once or twice a year. Saw Tom Jones at the 9:30 Club with a female friend. Would never have gone on my own but had a really great time. That dude still has it.

The two venues are quite different but I prefer the up-close intimacy of the Jammin' Java. 9:30 Club can turn into a mosh pit up near the stage (though at Tom Jones the pit was full of middle aged and older women throwing underwear).

I've been to the 9:30 Club. I saw Incubus in 2007. I saw Jamie Cullum there this past spring. I like that it's a small venue, but I hate that it is general audience. Which means there's a very good chance you can't see a thing but can hear the music. Best seats (large steps) are upstairs first row. Bring someone with you so you can save your seat while getting a drink or going to the bathroom.
