You guys are making it out to be a party to deploy as a contractor. A good friend just went, and while she got paid for 6 days a week instead of 5, she did not get any overtime, any hazard pay, or any tax benefits--it is difficult to get those perks as a civilian. You have to be deployed for at least 11 months and 2 weeks out of a year I believe. (She was "only" gone for 6 months.)

And they absolutely should. Risk and compensation should be inversely correlated. The government provides job security that the private sector lacks. People in private sector have the ability to make big money, but when the economy tanks (like it did 2 years ago), private sector people are let go by the masses.
