In addition to practical concerns, MD consistently blocks all attempts to cross the Potomac.

an extension of 28 north to around the Germantown area seems to make the most sense, with a nice bridge. it avoids the great falls zone and provides access from MD to Dulles (but MD hates Dulles, obviously). As a recent transplant from central PA currently living in Chantilly, I can tell you that it is really annoying to have to either go NW to Leesburg to take 2-lane country roads up to Frederick, or go east, on deadly deadly 66 to then go on the beltway to 270 to THEN go up to Frederick to continue to PA. Build a bridge in the middle! It's ridiculous to only have 2 bridges over a 40 mile distance in one of the most populated areas of the country...

If only we could get the officials in MD to change their minds. I don't know what that would take, to be honest. I think it would need much more than an election since people from several parties are against the idea.

So, I'm only vaguely aware of local politics, as I've lived in PA my whole life. Why don't MD officials want a bridge? Is there some sort of MD/VA animosity? Or is it more tax/business related.... keep MD business in MD, and keep VA business in VA?

Bingo. Also there are conservationist issues and historic issues. But IMO those are excuses. The real issue is $$$$$.

True. It would cost bazillions to build a new freeway + the 8 lane bridge you would need. And obviously the states would have to argue over splitting the cost (no easy way to figure that one out). Makes sense.

I don't think it's the cost of building the bridge. IMO it's the perceived threat to their tax base if we make it too easy for people to cross the river. I'm not sure exactly what the fear is, maybe that businesses would be less likely to grow in MD if Marylanders could easily cross the river to work in VA?

Yeah, possible. But wouldn't local MD governments want people to live in potentially cheaper MD (compared to Fairfax Country), and have an easy commute across the river to Dulles/Sterling/Herndon/Reston? Where they would shop and pay taxes in MD, but work in VA.

Thats why I think the capital cost of the new highway/bridge is the main problem...

A bridge in Woodbridge-Dumphries area leading onto Indian Head, Md area would be nice.

Yeah, wow... you have to go up to the beltway or miles and miles down to 301. Though that area of MD appears to be super rural.
