If you are teaching children how to ski, this really is a place that meets your criteria. However, if they are progressing and require increasing challenges, I'd go elsewhere. The great thing about Seven Springs mentioned by another poster is the self=containment of some of the lodging and entertainment/eateries. You can go from your room to the bowling alley, for example, without putting on a jacket. For families, I like areas that have tubing hills, an increasingly popular amenity at ski areas to keep children occupied. Regarding Snowshoe, it is indeed the premier mid-Atlantic area, but there is no way you can drive there from here safely in under 5 hrs.

I'm not sure how far away from here it is, but I've heard pretty good things about Camelback and Jack Frost/Big Boulder. I went to the Poconos in the summer and it was about a 3 1/2 hour trip one way, but we stopped at a couple rest areas along the trip. Good luck!
