If you want to go out to hear a band, which is better: State Theater or Ned Devines? Or is there another place that's better than both of those?

State Theatre gets more popular bands, and national acts. Ned Divine's is more of a bar/club atmosphere, and they tend to have cover bands or college rock/party bands. So, I'd say that Ned Divine's is probably more of a "fun" place, and State Theatre is a better place to see live music... if only because they will probably have more professional bands. I personally think State Theatre is a generic concert hall with poor sound. For a better concert experience, I prefer Rams head Live in Baltimore and 930 club in DC.

I like the Birchmere. It's made for old people who like me who want to sit and have a drink and dinner while listening to live music.

State Theatre tends to get the better bands. Which is a shame, in a way, because I don't really like their acoustics. I've never been to the Birchmere. I'll have to check it out.

I agree on the Birchmere! I love that place and the fact that we can have dinner and a drink there too.

Ned Devines doesn't have the space like State Theatre. But have to agree with Guamanian: prefer the 930 Club (I've been to the old one and "new" one).

Are you kidding? There are literally NO original live music venues in the area. If they did exist, they closed down a couple years ago. The only legit music venue that has live (orginal) music nearly every night of the week is Jammin' Java in Vienna.

What does original music mean?

I fail to see how the acts at the Birchmere or 9:30, for example, are non-original. Unless you mean they have "established music" or "old fogeys playing their hits of yore" music. Is "original music" meant to mean stylistically fresh, new, innovative, ground-breaking?

Personally, I'm happy I live near the Birchmere. I'd go broke if I visited every night they have live music from fine musicians.

Meaning that every night of the week they don't have original live music. (and yes, most the acts at Birchmere aren't contemporary either) On a good week the Birchmere has about 5 shows. The 930 club the same, and that includes DJ nights. Once again, the only club that has live music, and isn't a huge venue, is Jammin Java. The "real" clubs are in Baltimore.

I stand corrected. There's also IOTA, though not exactly a top venue.

I've never been to Jammin' Java. What sort of bands play there?
