I posted a while back inquiring about the commute from Leesburg (Evergreen Mills Road) to Tysons (Vienna zip) and got some feedback that rush hour is approximately 7-10 AM and that it would be an hour on a GOOD day. So, I was in town this past week and tried to see just how bad my commute would be. I drove the commute on Friday morning, leaving Leesburg at 7:35 and arriving at the office at 8:08. So, my question for everybody is, what happened to all the traffic? Was there some strange event occuring on 7/13 that happened to make the one day I did my commute be extra light for some reason? I am just very confused because I read so much about the horrible traffic on these boards and the traffic that morning was really bearable - I took 267 to 495S to Tysons. Thanks!!

Summer commuting times can be deceptive. Many families are on vacation, and lots of government employees have flex-time arrangements and take Fridays off. And, of course, the kids are not in school, so there are no school buses, students, or teachers heading to school.

Clare is right on the money. Traffic becomes almost non-existent here in the summer....well, non-existent by NOVA standards anyway. My experience has been that you can almost double your commute time if you are comparing what it is in July to what it will be in September.

And Fridays are also normally better, even during the school year-this is due to four day work weeks and flex schedules. But in the summer, wow! I love the summertime for traffic.

I second what has been said. Do not be fooled by a Friday morning commute in the summer! Summer traffic is always significantly lighter. And Friday's (even when schools are in session) tend to be lighter traffic days.

My own 11.5 mile commute is 10-15 minutes shorter in the summer...

I love summer traffic! It's amazing how much less grumpy I am.

Default DC area traffic

Yep, July & Aug are peak times to get out of the metro area, escape the heat/humidity etc. Big difference in commute times during those months.

Try doing that commute next Tuesday, after Labor Day, when all the kids are back in school and get back to us. Our predictions still stand...

Knopfler - I have now done the commute since labor day and last Thursday it took me 39 minutes (my car clocks it) leaving the house at 7 AM. Today it took me 46 minutes leaving the house at 8:15 AM . I just wanted to post an update since you had recommended I try after labor day and get back to you. I have now been living in Leesburg for 1 month and while there are days that the traffic seems worse, I still find it compeletely bearable - I guess coming from LA can do that to you
