How bad is the traffic from herndon to Arlington, close to VA Square Metro Station in the morning? Is it very very bad? I need to be there around 9:30 am. I was wondering when the best time is to leave. I am going to take 66, then 495 and 50 because of the HOV lanes of the beltway.

If you're getting to Arlington at 930am, you're hitting the butt of the rush hour. Small hint: Nutley to 29 to whatever road in Arlington would get you to VA Square.

That's better than 50 I think, which is tied up around: Washington Boulevard/395 in Arlington, Graham/Annandale around Falls Church, and points east of Fairfax City. Plus you avoid the Nutley to the Beltway crawl.

I'd leave at 8am, ask your boss for better hours, or take mass transit (and budget 2 hours).

Or, as hilsmom said take the Toll Road, it's $2 a day but will shave a good 30 minutes off your commute. (Sorry, I just assumed you were avoiding the Toll Road so I didn't even consider that.) The Toll Road will tie up around the Toll Plaza and the Beltway, and again through Reston, but it's nowhere near as bad as I-66.

I-66 might be dicey as I've noticed it clogs up pretty quick after opening to all traffic. Of course if you time it wrong you get nailed for HOV violation.

Good luck

was this something for this morning? while I was pregnant and not able to take public transport to VA Square area for a while, I was driving into the office. I would leave N.Reston at about 8:40 to get on the Toll Road, and would hit 66 right around 9 when it opens to all traffic. I would then hop off at that second exit and take washington blvd (I think?) all the way in. I would get to work by 9:30 without too much trouble.

I'd start by leaving at 8:15 am. If you arrive way too early then adjust the time you leave until you figure it out. BTW, wouldn't rt 7 all the way to rt. 29 be better than going down to 66? I'm sure traffic is bad on 7, but it's bad on 66 too. Just wondering because I've never lived in Herndon.
