over the long weekend we took two excursions on the Accotink trail, AKA the Cross County Trail. Due to leaving late, neither was that long.

The first

We drove down Americana past Patriot to the footbridge. We crossed the footbridge admiring the view of the beltway construction. I was interested in seeing that there was a temporary ramp on the Wakefield park side, the new ramp not being finished yet. We wandered about a bit, past the tennis courts, till we found the CCT. We took it north, across the bridges and the water crossing to the park right by LRT and the beltway. We concluded that the absence of a pedestrian crossing meant it would have taken 1 hour to get from our house to this point if we had walked the whole way - whereas if one could walk along LRT, it would take a little over 5 minutes. We then proceeded on the new part of the CCT under LRT, and then turned back, as it was getting dark. We saw a few joggers, a cyclist, etc.

if you live anywhere in or near FFX, and love to walk, and like the woods, you owe it to yourself to try it. The whole CCT runs from Pohick Bay all the way to the Potomac near Great Falls (which fact alone impressed DW).

How does the trail handle crossings at major roads?

differs with sections. The OLD part of accotink has at grade crossings, you have a crosswalk and just wait for a gap in traffic (at Barkley, Prosperity, and Woodburn). The newer parts - from King Arthur to wakefield park - has NO grade crossings - it crosses UNDER king arthur via an underpass, and under Little River the same way (there is an OLD underpass at Pickett RD). Wakefield park has no roads through it. I have not been on the trail down at Braddock.

from pickett where the "accotink trail" ends up to the start of the difficult run trail , the CCT follows a hodgepodge of sidewalks on streets and trails through smaller parks.

The trail passes under Braddock Rd from Wakefield Park to the concessions area of Accotink Park. From thereyou can pick up a new black-top section that connects below the dam and continues along the creek and through the woods to under Old Keene Mill Rd and through the woods again to the Daventry neighborhood. You can keep going by following the CCT (Cross County Trail) signs on a network of trails and neighborhood streets all the way to the old Lorton prison grounds and even farther. If you haven't biked any sections or all of the CCT, your missing out on an adventure in our own back yards.

Is this the trail that runs somewhat close to route 50 at Nutley? Is there a trial head there?
