Im looking for a realtor to help me look for apartments. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Also do you know how much realtors charge/ what there commissions are for helping one find a place?

The realtor fee is paid by the prospective landlord so you don't have to pay anything to him/her.

hi cheerios, my wife and I just did the same thing you are doing in fairfax county, with a realtor. mlv was right: the fee is paid by the landlord, so you don't have to pay the realtor anything.

Jerry Carrillo was our realtor - he is based out of manassas but helped us out in chantilly/centreville/fairfax. google him, he was very helpful and put in a lot of work for us, considering realtors don't really get paid much for rentals...

I know anecdotes aren't data, but we found prices on realtor offered places to be noticeably higher than ones we found ourselves on Craigslist, rent.com, etc. Because the landlords pay a fee to the realtor, I think they raise the monthly rent to offset that cost. We ended up finding a place similar to the ones the realtors showed us for $300/month less by doing the leg work ourselves.

I agree. The realtor is compensated by the landlord forfeiting one month's rent to the agent.

The issue you may have going this route is you are not protected if the landlords property is in foreclosure. You may be bounced with no recourse if the bank takes the house. There are no rental rights in Virginia.

We ended up going with a realtor because the rent.com apartments usually were not very nice, or too expensive. and the property management company people were like used car salesmen, or just plain rude.

We started with craigslist, but listings there are a little less frequent out in the burbs (and less reliable). Oftentimes the stuff on CL was the same stuff as on rent.com, just posted by property management firms...
