Yes, that level of nimbyism exists in every single community in America. Even the smallest town is bound to have someone who doesn't like a new business or a change in zoning and will say so. This is America, everyone's entitled to say so if they don't like something. Big deal.

FWIW, I think the nimbyism being displayed in Leesburg is a great example of the nimbyism that has been complained about in other situations. We make such a big deal over a whole lot of nothing. It's always seemed silly to me because most nimbyism is nothing more than one or two individuals trying to make a lot of noise and getting nowhere. There are occasional exceptions, but usually they have no power, and they change nothing. They're ignored by city officials (and pretty much everyone else), but someone's always bound to claim it's a Nimby Threat if someone posts an angry comment or two on the internet.

You could complain to the owner of La Tache about that, since it's the same owner as the former Trophy Room. He started La Tache partially as a way to get back at the city for denying his expansion/construction request.

There were plenty of upset people and controversy in Alexandria when La Tache opened. Now there is Lotus Blooms on upper King St as well. Some people tried to get the city to stop or close La Tache, but the store broke no laws.

Old Town sex shop raising eyebrows - Alexandria Virginia News | LocalKicks

I for one am glad any time something other than an antique store (or ice cream parlor - the Mayor's preference, see above link) opens in Old Town. But I'm not surprised one bit whenever there is an outcry about anything sex-related, many Americans are squeamish about public acknowlegment that humans have sex. And such NIMBY-ism or puritanism is not confined to NOVA, regardless of the assertions of some posters who take any opportunity to get a dig in at our region.

LOL the same is true in Leesburg. They have too many antique stores, and nobody was shopping on King Street anymore because all that was there was antiques and kitty cat statues. If this sparks a little curiousity it could be just what King Street needs.

I drove past La Tache in Leesburg today. I was waiting at the light, and I had to look hard to find it. It is pretty much the opposite of giant neon lights flashing "XXX." The windows look more tasteful than Victoria's Secret, honestly.

I hope they do well.

For those who don't know Leesburg, King Street is downtown and across the street from the courthouse. It mostly has gift shops, candle shops, restaurants, and touristy type stores. Sort of like Old Town Alexandria.

I don't understand why there would be an objection. It's not like they have porno on display in the window. IMO the window displays at Victoria Secrets in the mall are worse than what you see at Le Tache. Some people fear it will make Leesburg seedy, but Old Town Alexandria has a shop run by the same company, and that area hasn't become seedy.

What do you guys think?

Seems like the negative publicity won't be negative. I'm sure the shop will open with no problems, just like others. At least its not the Pleasure Chest or one of those.

As a side activity, I wonder if they'll offer classes for pole dancing? Seems to be alot of interest in that these days.
