Are there any used bookstores around here that will buy books rather than offer a credit at the store? I am moving soon and need to get rid of books that won't have a home in our new house and I don't see the sense in storing them in boxes.

I use C&W Books in Woodbridge. They will give you cash for books but the amount is about half of what you would get in store credit. I guess it's something. Also, if your books are very mainstream (meaning they already have too many copies) or they are too old, they won't take them.

I've been donating mine to the public libraries and various organizations and just taking the tax deduction on them.

Not sure how quick you need the money, but I've always used Amazon to sell my books.

McKays books in Manassas will give you cash or credit. They are on Business Route 234 in a shopping center. I believe the cash they give you is 20% of their selling price (and credit is about 40%). You can call them to confirm - (703) 361-9042.

Mckay Books is in the Manaport Shopping Center across from Manassas Mall. I don't know the address for McKay but I believe Manassas Mall is 8300 Sudley Rd. Or put in the intersection of Sudley Rd and Rixlew Ln and it's right there. I was just there the other day. I had three books on CD and the amount they wanted to give me was pretty darn low so I didn't use them.

thanks so far. I'm not in a huge rush so amazon could be an option for my hardbacks.

There's also www.half.com where you can list books for sale. I've used them both selling and buying and it has worked well. It's also a great way to buy and sell college text books.

I don't know if they buy books, but if you just want a neat shop to browse through check out the used book store at Lake Anne Plaza in Reston. I love love love going there on a winter's day.
