Hi there! Is there anywhere in NoVA where I can buy a cheap, silky Chinese robe? I figure I could go troll Chinatown in DC but my guess is there are more potential resources out here in the 'burbs. My daughter needs a costume for her school play. Thank you!

You might try some of the Asian stores in Springfield in the centers along Backlick Rd. Even the food stores often sell apparel items.

Thrift stores--Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. Should find one for a few dollars. Check out the ladies' section as she could probably fit a small.

Try asking at one of the asian-owned women's nail shops. They might know.

Not sure what kind of budget you're looking at but by putting "chinese dresses" into a search engine a bunch of stuff came up. Here's an example Chinese Dress,Traditional Chinese Clothing,Qipao,Cheongsam,Chinese Jacket-Eaststore.Com

Good luck.

Don't bother with China Town, there really arent' that many stores that sell merchandise anymore. You will have better luck at the stores others have mentioned. Are you looking for a Chinese robe or a dress, I've never seen robes for girls but lots of dresses or the two piece pajamas. Also try Freecycle.org and ask if anyone has one. Also check craigslist.

Actually, had a better -- cheaper -- idea: Ebay. Here's a page chinese dress items - Get great deals on Clothing, Shoes Accessories, Collectibles items on eBay.com!

Good luck.

Thanks, everyone - especially for the warning not to waste an afternoon in Chinatown. The costume assignment is a robe in a very specific color, which would have to be short to fit my daughter. I found some lovely cheongsams online but my daughter insists it has to be a robe. I think that's probably because the teachers thought a robe would be easier to find than a cheongsam, but oddly enough that hasn't proven to be the case!
