This time we didnt bother with the foot bridge over the beltway, but just drove to wakefield park. Didnt park by the rec center, but by the facilities near the baseball fields.

Walked south on the CCT, this time passed under Braddock Road at the underpass. then continued through Lake Accotink park. Did not quite make it as far as the facilities LAP, but did get a view of the lake.

Seemed like a lot more trail users this time, I dont know if its that this section is busier, or that it was a bit earlier in the day. Certainly it was quite cold. In addition to a bunch of cyclists and runners, we also saw quite a few walkers (both and without canine companions) - in our other walks we had seen few other walkers. We were gratified to see a number of teens using the trail.

We also a dad and son in skates with hockey sticks getting off the frozen Accotink Creek, close to where the lake forms. They said the ice was thick, and there had been a hockey game on it.

We also saw a bunch of deer.

As it got dark we walked back, but decided to extend our walk a bit by walking up the Rec Center and then back to the car.

Yet another great hiking review. I hope you keep posting these. I don't always have a response to make, but I really enjoy reading them.

we spend a lot of time complaining here about life in NoVa, and heaven knows I do too. I wanted to post something positive about a great and unique thing we have here in Fairfax.

The cross county trail is, my DW and I are finding, a wonderful facility - we use walking to improve our own health and fitness - we also believe in the preservation of nature, especially important in this county, with its density and stress. I want to let people know what we have and encourage its use. DW especially worries that not enough people, especially children and teens, fully use the outdoors and connect with nature. This last trip was especially gratifying in that regard, to see so many people using the trail even in the cold.

Not only a great and unique thing, but also something that is surprisingly unknown. I know people who have lived here for decades who don't know about it or have heard of it but don't know where it is.

Occasionally I walk around Lake Accotink. It's about 4 miles and except for a short stretch by King's Glen Elementary (Danbury Forest Dr)...you're in the woods.

What ever happened with the part of the CCT that goes by the Madeira School in Mclean....last I read, Madeira was fighting it tooth and nail.

So, of the four excursions so far, which one was your favorite?
