Fairfax County Public Schools have posed the following question on their Facebook page:
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is looking at calendar options to better meet the instructional needs of students. Specifically, FCPS is considering pursuing a waiver to allow the school system to open a week before Labor Day beginning with the school year 2012-13.We want to know, do you support starting school before Labor Day?

It is interesting to read the comments, and there are a ton!

A survey was also emailed to staff.

Where does the extra week go then? Is there an extra week of vacation? An extra week of instruction? (Will employees be paid more for that extra week?) Does school end a week earlier in June?

My school district in California always, always, always started the Thursday after Labor Day. Then a few years ago, they decided to start in mid August instead. They now just get out a couple weeks earlier in June. I'm not really sure what the point of the change was.

It's not a longer school year. The student year and teacher contract would stay the same length. It would just start a week earlier. One "benefit" that FCPS notes in the survey is that school would end a week earlier in June.

I think Virginia should seriously dump this after Labor day law. I would leave it up to school districts to determine their own individual start dates. I do support year-round schooling.

It should definitely start before Labor Day. By August, kids are ready to get back to school but by May they are checking out.

I prefer school start after Labor Day. FCPS hasn't yet decided where my children will be attending school in September. They need to figure out overcrowding and boundary issues before they tackle this.

I don't remember the exact number, but the majority of counties do start before Labor Day.

Me too. I mean, hey, the pool is paid for through Labor Day and the water is warmer at the end of August than it is in June!

If you are referring to the modified calendar, it definitely has it's advantages.

The ocean doesn't warm up until August.
