Just wondering.... since traffic over the bridges can get backed up, why don't we have more ferries?

VDOT did a study regarding high speed ferries between NOVA and DC. I think it would be great!

Probably because there aren't a whole lot of places along the river where it would be feasible. The current, rocks, and width have to be just right. Great Falls would certainly be an issue. A ferry across the river near Mount Vernon would take a pretty long time to get across. The depth of the river might not be enough for a independent boat and it would be too long for a cable type like White's Ferry.

Plus, Maryland controls the river and they fight just about everything.

It would be a time killer waiting for the ferry to load and unload.

Exactly. They have a ferry that goes from Alexandria to National Harbor and it's kind of a PITA. It's fun to do as a novelty, ubt not something to use as transportation.

If they want to do something just for novelty, I wouldn't mind seeing Venetian style gondolas going across the Potomac in the summer. I'd pay to ride in one of those, especially if the rower sings!

LOL, I might let someone row me across the river but I don't want to hear any singing!

I would always be tempted to stand on the bow and yell "I'm the king of the world! Woooooo!!"

Has everyone forgotten last December when the cable broke on White's Ferry?

BTW I was just making a silly suggestion. The current is way too strong for gondolas. Singing or not singing.
