West Virginia also has some good campgrounds, and it's not that far to drive there.

does anyone have any experience at chincoteague or assateague? I'm more in to the isolated, quiet, camping experience, not the campers+50 million screaming children experience. are there a lot of people at the tent areas in the dunes (I'm thinking a nice weekend in May or June)?

This isn't really from camping experience, but I think if you go before Memorial Day weekend, it will be a lot less crowded. Being that it's a beach, Memorial Day weekend seems to be the start of the season. We visited Chincoteague for a few nights last April (during Spring Break) and it was obvious that it was off season. There were certainly people around, but it was not crowded. We stayed in a hotel, though. We did visit a few campgrounds because my husband likes to camp, and we thought we might go in the future. They didn't seem overally crowded, but there were definitely others there.

I would think a non-holiday weekend in May would be your best bet.

Also not camping experience, but to me it seemed that it was a quieter beach experience in comparison to Ocean City or VA Beach.

We love going to Prince William Forest to camp. They have some more private camp sites than the typical campground feel. Also Pohich Bay has camping on the Potomac which is supposed to be very nice

I've never tried it myself, but I've heard a few good reviews of the campgrounds there. I agree, go before Memorial Day for the best experience.

Beware of going in the spring. We went camping in the Shenandoah last May, we spent one night camping and we left covered in ticks! The advantage to waiting until later in the summer is that the heat kills the ticks.

LOL, it doesn't get THAT hot here! You'd need to have temps over 105 for at least five days to kill ticks.
