What are the best places to camp? I'm an amateur camper. Are there any places in NOVA that offer a great view?

There are a lot of places. If you want to stay in No VA, then Burke Lake Park or Lake Fairfax Park are nice. If you are willing to go a bit farther, then Bull Run Park in Manassas has nice sites, or you can go to the Shenandoah Mountains to Big Meadows. There is also the George Washington National Forest and Massanutten Mountain. If you let me know your tolerance for lack of running water, I can tell you about some really nice places that you can camp at. Such as Elizabeth Furnace or Camp Roosevelt.

I'm looking for a good place to kind of... "rough it". Two people, small tent. Hike in somewhere a couple miles, make camp, hang out, maybe see something cool. Then hike back out in the AM. Don't need running water or bathroom facilities.

Here's a free directory.

BTW, the website claims "Virginia's State Parks have been voted the nation's very best parks in the United States." I don't know if they're the best, but it sounds like camping here is pretty good.

When are you going? If you can wait until Spring, then I'd recommend the Shenandoahs. If you want to go now, Chincoteague/Assateague might be a better choice. If you want to try out the campground in the newest regional part (up near Lucketts in Loudoun) I think you have to wait until this summer.

Dicks, REI, and Eastern Mountain Sports may know of a few other spots, as well.

Shenandoah is a great place to camp and they do have locations where you can "rough it." It may be a bit cold to go now though.

Over the summer I went hiking on the "little devils staircase" in Shenandoah, and came across a group of two dads and their sons (boys looked to be about 10-12 years old). They were "backcountry" camping and seemed to be having a great time. The little devils staircase was a real nice little hike, too.

thanks for all the tips everyone. It is definitely way too cold to do now, I agree, but come a nice, warm and dry weekend in April (only two months away!), I am looking for a place to get away. I didn't even think of Chincoteague/Assoteague, that would be super-cool.

It's a great place to camp, but avoid it in August when the mosquitos really come out in Assateague (not so much of a problem in Chincoteague).
