Total Beverage and other liquor stores- strong small to mid-sized boxes great for housewares and books.

Kinko's et al for boxes with lids (once held reams of paper.)

Not sure about cardboard boxes in recycling dumpsters behind businesses.

I like the boxes you can get from a liquor or wine store, particularly for glasses or other breakables. The boxes are sturdy but also have separators inside of them. I did feel a little bit like a lush while the movers moved them for me. But they work well.

If you work in an office, start bringing home the empty boxes used for copier and printer paper. Try to snag the lids too! For my last move, though, the best boxes I used were bankers boxes purchased from Staples. They were 10/$15 or something like that. Very durable, easy to stack, and not so big that I overstuffed them, making the boxes impossible to carry. So, if you can't find all your boxes for free, you may want to supplement them with a package of fold-them-yourself bankers boxes.

If you have extra closet space, I recommend hanging onto the box lids. Stash a bunch in a little nook if you can. They're very handy for all sorts of household projects, especially messy projects like painting or planting seedlings.

I prefer plastic tubs and wicker cubes (cheap at Ikea) to boxes. They serve as handy, deliberate-looking storage for stuff...be honest, how many boxes from previous moves have you never opened? Also (at least with the plastic) less chance of hitchhiking critters.

I'm expecting movers at any moment and will probably have a couple hundred boxes. You mentioned your company recycles moving boxes, I would be happy to take them to a company knowing they will be reused instead of thrown away.
