My moving company offers free boxes (all the used ones you can take), but the used boxes are very popular and the selection is thin. I want to reuse as many boxes as possible (not waste money on too many new ones). Can anyone suggest other places where one can get free boxes? What about stores that get shipments in boxes? Are any known to give away free, used boxes?

Thanks!

You can check with local grocery stores, but it all depends on their policies. Most break down boxes for recycling, and some refuse to give out boxes for different reasons. You can check with neighbors who may work in office buildings or have recently moved and may have access to some extra boxes (anything other than copy paper ones - those are flimsy and will fall apart). We are on our third move with U-Haul boxes now that still haven't fallen apart so although they weren't free, they ended up paying for themselves. Even the boxes through the moving company don't seem to stand up as well. Good Luck!

Try your area's Freecycle. They usually have moving boxes and you can always place a "wanted" ad.

I've offered and received free moving boxes from craigslist multiple times.

I got mine from my local Giant, where I've been a regular customer for years, but then someone on this forum once pointed out that grocery boxes might have bugs in them .

Try your local Virginia ABC store. I used to work in the Broadlands store, and we always had plenty of boxes. I estimate that we threw out probably 20 boxes a day. The boxes are not real big, but that's a plus. The bigger the box, the heavier it gets... especially if there are books in it.

Craigslist and Freecyle are good places - I've given away tons of boxes/packing peanuts/bubble wrap, etc. (packrat, I keep them all in the basement, LOL).

Ask the produce department at your grocery store for bananna boxes - they are the strongest boxes I have found for moving

Costco has all kinds of boxes, and will give you as many as you want.

Thanks everyone! Hopefully if I hit up most of these places, I will find enough boxes. Let's just hope there is enough room in my car! Luckily, I can fold down all the seats (well, except the driver's seat).
