Granted this is coming from someone who usually only attends church for weddings and funerals...

...but my impression of mega-churches is that while they may be generally socially conservative, they can also be diverse by varying degrees. As I understand them, these churches are found primarily in the South, Southwest and Mountain West through to California. I know that I always see a lot more when I reach NC and TN.

As far as around here goes, at least by my personal definition, I'm not sure where mega-churches can be found. I would be surprised if any were in Fairfax County and points east. I would hazard a guess that more would be found towards Richmond. There could be some over in MD.

Is this the one on Rte 7 near Tysons? With the giant parking garage? It's annoying when service ends b/c the trail of cars keeps coming and coming and coming . . . out. The police are out there directing traffic. I wonder who pays for that!?

In newer suburbs, yes. But not necessarily "white...Republican". There are several really large, all-black megachurches in Prince Georges County Maryland - I'm talking almost in the 10,000 member range:
- Ebenezer A.M.E. (allentown road)
- Glenarden Baptist (upper marlboro)
- Jericho City of Praise (largo, close to redskins stadium)
- From the Heart church (temple hills)

There are also numerous really big mega-churches, in Prince Georges and Charles Counties Maryland, with very integrated black and white congregations and leadership, and they are politically non-partisan:
- Riverdale Baptist (largo road in upper marlboro)
- Evangel Cathedral (upper marlboro, near 6 flags park)
- New Life Wesleyan (La Plata)
- South Potomac (La Plata) - in fact, their white pastor and his white wife have raised 3 Black adopted teenagers
- National Church of God (Oxon hill)

Slowlane - I stand corrected. Thanks for educating me. I was looking at it from the aspect of where I come from (Southern California) and where I live now (Virginia). Didn't occur to me what's over in Maryland.

Let's keep this thread focused on sharing information about mega-churches in NOVA or at most the DC metro (including MD suburbs).
