I know it will take a few hours to drive to any beach (sob!!) but which would be the closest? (I do mean near the ocean, not a bay.) Thanks!

If you want an ocean beach, it all comes down to which beach is closest to the bridge (since everyone has to cross it before you get over to Delmarva). I think Rehoboth is probably the shortest distance from the bridge, but check the map. It's possible there's a direct route to Bethany that would make it even closer.

Delaware's Cape Henlopen State Park:

Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes, Delaware

Rehoboth is about the same distance-wise, but to get there, you will be stuck in traffic for a while on DE Route 1, and then you have to worry about finding a place to park in Rehoboth (not fun).

Yeah the main beaches that folks in this area flock to are Dewey and Rehoboth beaches. I went to Rehoboth for the first time last Labor day and had a blast. Plenty of folks from the DC area over there in the summer.

Two hours and forty five minues to Rehobeth -- done it a million times. On a Saturday it is a nightmare -- the bridge and then the Route 1 crawl.

I'd do a cost-benefit analysis. Maybe its faster and cheaper to fly to a beach.

I wouldn't go that far. Its just a tank of gas. From my understanding you have to get up early. I got up pretty early when I went to Rehoboth Labor day weekend and didn't encounter any traffic until I got into Rehoboth.

I've never had a problem if I leave by 6AM.

Only! I grew up 1/2 hour from the beach so this is a hard concept to get used to. =D
