Default Relocating from San Diego to the DC Area

We are possibly looking to relocate from San Diego to the Washington DC area and NOVA seems to be the best bet (or better than MD). But since we won't be able to make a make a trip to check out areas we need help. We have 2 small kids under 2 so parks are really important as well as walkability. We don't need to be in the middle of the nightlife but a few great restaurants, coffee shops, etc... My husband will be working in DC on Pennsylvania Ave. He's not planning on driving but wants to be able to walk or drive a very short distance to a Metro and only be on the metro for 30 min or so. We are looking for at least a 2 bedroom under $2K. High rises and complexes are fine because we like having pools, fitness centers, etc...Any help would be great!

I'd suggest something close to the following Metro stations: East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, or Vienna---all surrounded by lots of families with kids. I'm partial to East Falls Church. You should be able to find a decent, but not luxurious place for under 2k. Luxury is going to cost you another $300-500.

Could move further into the burbs.. and get a lot more for your buck! Plus better schools for the kids.

Not to knock your definition of "better", but Yorktown HS in Arlington, George Mason HS in Falls Church, Marshall HS in Falls Church, and Madison HS in Vienna are some of the best high schools in NOVA. In fact, a few years ago, George Mason HS was ranked in the top 100 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, the other 3 schools mentioned were all included in Newsweek Magazine's top 200 schools in the nation at one time or another in the last decade. Not too shabby.

If you don't mind an apartment one area to consider is crystal city. Easy access to the metro, 20 minute total commute for husband. There are lots of things to walk to and the Virginia highlands park near pentagon city has a nice play ground, you can walk to it in 10 minutes. Even the elementary school in the area is top notch. Check out the crystal house apartments run by Archstone. The area is also very safe. We lived there with a small baby before we bought a house and really liked how easy it was to access everything.

East falls church may be better for 2 children though.

East Falls Church is very nice, but there aren't many apartment complexes within walking distance, and the parking lot at that station is tiny.

I agree about the area, but the Archstone is well above $2K for a 2 BR (click on floor plans - 2 BRs start at $2200 and go up).

An older complex is River House--maybe it will be somewhat cheaper:
