AFAICT, the commonwealth chose to name it that, basically to thumb their noses at the Federal govt - i mean the road runs right near the Pentagon, close to the rest of the Fed govt complex, etc.

It would however be hopeless for NoVans to try to get the name changed - we would all get called PC liberals - hell, I expect to be called a PC liberal by fellow NoVans right here on this thread.

I think the best thing would be to subvert the meaning. Create a hipster community on Jeff Davis Highway, with businesses, galleries, etc that play off the name in an "ironic" way.

Might actually redeem hipsterdom, IMO

There is not such place as "Northern Virginia". It is all Virginia and Richmond is the capital. When NOVA becomes the state of "North Virginia", then let me know.

Well, there sort of is, considering that he was on Virginia soil when he attempted to launch his slave insurrection at Harper's Ferry: John Brown Monument Marker

As long as we are changing names, someone please the name of T.C. Williams HS? T.C. Williams was against desegregating Alexandria City Public Schools in the 60s. Now that HS is mostly black and latino.

To be honest, I could care less about having Confederate names and I say this as a black guy.

There was serious discussion about doing this, when the new school building was under construction. Although I didn't follow it that closely, it seemed that a lot of people didn't want to change the name since the school had become famous with "Remember the Titans." I wonder if the decision would have been different if the movie had not been made.

because no regions exist, only legal jurisdictions?

Maybe you should complain to city data about the name of this forum.

Or if you prefer, you can substitute "Arlington" where I said "nova"

I know, and that's sad -- the part about slavery, not about taxes!

Why not? There's a statue in his honor in Trafalgar Square or somewhere near there.
